Ladbrokes Premiership: Team of the Season

Published:

From Celtic’s scintillating attack to Hearts’ steely defence, the 2015-16 Ladbrokes Premiership was packed with drama, excitement and some outstanding performers.

The Ladbrokes SPFL have selected their dream team for this campaign – and as always, who deserves to make the cut is a passionate topic for fans, from Aberdeen to Ayrshire. So, here are the big-name stars and fan favourites who made this year’s starting XI.

GK: Jamie Macdonald (Kilmarnock)

The experienced former Hearts stopper helped secure Killie’s top-flight status with some outstanding displays, including an impressive clean sheet at Celtic Park in November – and an even more important one in the 4-0 Premiership play-off final victory over Falkirk.

RB: Shay Logan (Aberdeen)

One of the Dons most impressive performers during the second half of the season, the Manchester-born defender was a constant threat going forward, netting four times from December onwards.

CB: Andrew Davies (Ross County)

The 31-year-old impressed greatly in his first campaign north of the border, proving himself both a solid defender and a leader in the Staggies squad. Combative, calm and good in the air, Davies has quickly become a fans’ favourite in Dingwall.

CB: Igor Rossi (Hearts)

A former Copa Libertadores winner, the classy Rossi has brought a touch of Brazilian flair to Robbie Neilson’s outfit. His ability to play the ball out from the back and begin promising attacks has the former Maritimo man a huge asset at Tynecastle.

LB: Kieran Tierney (Celtic)

The 18-year-old had only made three appearances for the Hoops before this season but established himself as the country’s best left-back in 2015-16. Providing six assists along the way to his first Ladbrokes Premiership title, the fleet-footed youngster capped it all off with a first senior goal on the final day against Motherwell.

CM: Graeme Shinnie (Aberdeen)

Having swapped the Highlands for the high-flying Dons last summer, the 24-year-old adapted to life at Pittodrie instantly. A player whose game-reading is second to none, the ever-reliable Shinnie broke up opposition attacks, while setting up his Reds teammates for five goals.

CM: Tom Rogic (Celtic)

The Australian’s campaign is likely to be best remembered for his spectacular late winner against Kilmarnock in March, but that was far from his only contribution. A superb passer of the ball, he set up a number of chances which Leigh Griffiths’ converted, as well as netting eight of his own along the way.

CM: Arnaud Djoum (Hearts)

The midfielder arrived in Gorgie last summer having played top-flight football in the Netherlands, Poland and Turkey. But Hearts fans will be hoping Djoum settles down in Scotland, following a superb first season from the robust midfielder, whose headed winner against Partick Thistle in March showed his aerial prowess.

AM: Jonny Hayes (Aberdeen)

A fantastic distributor with a fierce strike, the pacy Hayes has given more than a few defenders sleepless nights this season. Notching up an impressive 12 assists en route to a second-placed finish with the Dons, the Republic of Ireland star proved himself the man for the big occasion, with a goal in February’s 2-1 win over Celtic.

CF: Leigh Griffiths (Celtic)

31 goals in 34 games is a hugely impressive record which speaks for itself – but even the goalscoring stats don’t do justice to Griffiths’ importance for the Parkhead club. Chipping in with five assists along the way, the 25-year-old was a huge part of the Bhoys’ all-round attacking game.

CF: Kane Hemmings (Dundee)

After a difficult season at Barnsley, the lightning-quick Hemmings revitalised his career at Dens Park with a magnificent 21-goal haul, securing a respectable eight-placed finish for the Dees. Scoring both goals in a 2-2 draw against city rivals Dundee United enhanced his cult hero status with Dark Blues fans, as did an August winner over Tayside rivals St Johnstone.
