French Open 2016: Wawrinka and Muguruza boosted by Ladbrokes

With some enthralling action from the Madrid and Rome Masters in recent weeks the clay court season is well underway and will reach its peak at the French Open next week.
Despite losing in straight sets to Andy Murray in the Rome final, world number one Novak Djokovic heads to Roland Garros as the 8/11 favourite, with nine-time champion Rafa Nadal next in the betting at 4/1.
Murray himself can be backed at 5/4 but thanks to our latest price boost it’s surprise 2015 winner Stanislas Wawrinka who could prove the value bet.
The Swiss ace has struggled on the dust this term, bowing out in the quarter-final in Monte Carlo, second round in Madrid and last 16 in Rome, but he showed last year that he can turn it on when it matters.
He fared only slightly better in the build up to the 2015 event, with a semi-final in Rome his only noteworthy showing from four clay events, but reeled off wins against Roger Federer, home- favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Novak Djokovic to lift the trophy in Paris.
With this in mind Wawrinka was always worth backing at 14/1 but with his odds now enhanced to a whopping 20/1 there will be plenty of tennis punters tempted to back a repeat of last year’s proceedings.
Meanwhile, in the women’s side of the draw it’s no surprise to see Serena Williams head the betting at 2/1. Viktoria Azarenka (5/1) and Simona Halep (6/1) are considered the powerhouse American’s biggest rivals but leading the chase as a lively outsider is Garbine Muguruza.
The Spaniard recovered from stuttering performances in Stuttgart and Madrid to reach the semi-finals in Rome and even in defeat to Madison Keys showed that she is ready for the challenge in France.
The 22-year-old reached the quarter-final last year but announced herself as one to watch by reaching the 2015 Wimbledon final shortly after.
That taste of the big time means Muguruza returns to Roland Garros as a more experienced campaigner and with her odds being pushed from 10/1 to a whopping 14/1. This enhancement means that placing bet – each-way or otherwise – on the Spaniard upsetting the status quo could prove a shrewd selection.
