Former Inter boss looks certain to be next Watford manager

Published:

Quique Sanchez Flores has announced his exit from Vicarage Road this summer, following weeks of speculation. However, Watford fans are unlikely to have an anxious wait to discover the identity of their next gaffer, with ex-Inter Milan boss Walter Mazzarri the red-hot favourite at 1/5.

The 54-year-old Italian notably led Napoli to Coppa Italia glory in 2011-12 but has been out of the game since 2014, meaning his position as clear frontrunner for this role may have surprised a few of the Hornets faithful.

Roberto Di Matteo is second in the running at 10/1 to return to English football, having guided Chelsea to Champions League glory.

Luigi De Canio is the joint-third favourite at 12/1 and with the current Udinese boss having an obvious connection to Watford’s owners, the Pozzo family, he could be a successful dark horse to take this post.

Nigel Pearson and Roberto Martinez are also 12s while 14/1 says that Manuel Pellegrini remains in the Premier League as Hornets boss.

David Moyes (14/1) has been linked with every job going since he left Real Sociedad while Jose Mourinho’s name has mostly been associated with the Old Trafford job.

Still, with Manchester United now unlikely to secure Champions League football, 20/1 could prove a long enough price to get fans backing the Portuguese boss to head for Hertfordshire.

However, our traders have essentially ruled out Eddie Howe (33/1) and Sean Dyche (33/1) exiting their posts to take up the Watford vacancy, meaning fans of Bournemouth and Burnley alike can breathe a sigh of relief.

Sanchez Flores takes charge of his final Hornets match on Sunday, as Sunderland make the long journey south. Watford are 20/21 to send their exiting manager out on a high, with Sunderland 13/5 to win and the same odds for honours even.
