Celtic help Deila sign-off in style with seven-goal romp

Celtic ended the Ladbrokes Premiership season in supreme style on the final day, thumping Motherwell 7-0 at home in manager Ronny Deila’s last game in charge of the club.

The Norwegian had announced some weeks ago that this campaign would be his last at Celtic Park and his players ensured his swansong would be a match he’d never forget.

Seven different goalscorers got on the scoresheet for the hosts, including 16-year-old debutant Jack Aitchison, who netted the seventh of the game in the 77th minute.

It was the perfect send-off for Deila, who leaves having extended the club’s title-winning run in the league to five seasons with his second consecutive success in the division.

In an emotional interview following the final whistle, the 40-year-old said: “”I just want to thank every Celtic supporter. Of course, I want to thank my players, the staff and everyone who works hard at the club.”

In wishing their manager farewell, the Celtic fans unfurled a banner thanking the Porsgrunn native for his time in charge.

Elsewhere it wasn’t such a sweet final day for silver-medallists Aberdeen, who suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at home to Ross County. The loss was their third in a row in the league.

Two goals in either half for the visitors ensured they collected the points and ended the season in sixth place.

In the other match to take place on Sunday, 10-man Hearts drew 2-2 with St Johnstone at home.

Abiola Dauda received his marching orders in the 57th minute for the Jam Tarts, but the visitors were unable to make their advantage pay and the score remained deadlocked from the 20th minute.
