Catching Kachy to prove impossible in the Temple Stakes

There is a bumper card of nine races from Goodwood, Haydock and York awaiting Channel 4 viewers this Saturday.

In the hope of making such viewing a profitable one, here are three eye-catching bets to keep an eye on:

Nap – Mount Logan – 14:50 Goodwood

Mount Logan enjoyed a productive end to 2015, finishing fourth in the Wolferton Stakes, third in the John Smith’s Cup and then winning a Goodwood handicap, before a solid second in another at Sandown.

The form of that last contest has worked out well this term, with the winner landing the spoils gain at Group 2 level and the third taking another handicap from a 2lb higher mark.

This step up in trip to 1m4f is also expected to suit Mount Logan and he looks a worthy favourite at 15/8.

NB – Kachy – 16:10 Haydock

Mecca’s Angel is understandably the clear favourite here, given she avoids a penalty for winning the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes last year and receives weight from many older males in the Temple Stakes field.

However, her chances largely hinge on whether enough rain has fallen at Haydock in the last 24 hours. Conditions at the track are currently good (good to soft in places) and Mecca’s Angel is ultimately at her best when there is plenty of give in the going.

This suggests it may pay to take a chance on something else further down the betting and the only three-year-old in the field, Kachy, may be overpriced at 12/1.

Three horses in this age group have triumphed since 2003 and Kachy is still unbeaten at this 5f minimum trip, winning all three starts. His only defeat came over 7f.

Kachy receives weight from the whole field, has the benefit of a run this season, is unbeaten over this distance and will be at his best if the ground isn’t too soft. He certainly looks each-way value.

Lively Longshot – Barnet Fair – 15:50 York

Promoting the chances of a horse that has won just won once in his last 27 starts is tough, but Barnet Fair (14/1) has shown enough in recent starts to indicate that another victory isn’t too far away.

He ended last season looking a likely winner entering the final furlong at Ascot when fifth before putting in a credible effort on his first appearance of the current campaign at Thirsk, finishing in the same position.

The eight-year-old has been dropped another 1lb by the handicapper for that run and gets further weight removed by the 3lb claim of jockey Joe Doyle.

This means he effectively runs at York off a mark of 85, which is his lowest for five years. Barnet Fair is certainly handicapped to win a race of this calibre.
