Arsenal rejoin the chase to land Inter ace this summer

On course for their lowest goal tally at the Emirates for seven seasons, it’s clear Arsenal have been lacking some firepower up front this season, but it seems Arsene Wenger is set to make amends.

With one game to go on home soil, Arsenal have netted just 27 times, including nine occasions where they scored one or none from their 18 fixtures thus far.

The Gunners haven’t been this lacklustre at home since grabbing 31 goals in the 2008-09 season, but with Aston Villa still to visit, that total could be beaten.

That wouldn’t hide their problems however, with Olivier Giroud not scoring since mid-January, and though Alexis Sanchez has been in fine form of late, it’s clear Arsenal need some added quality offensively if they’re to challenge next term.

One man linked with the Gunners before Christmas, but whose name has cropped up again, is Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi.

The 23-year-old has been in excellent form for I Nerazzurri, netting 15 times from 32 appearances in Serie A, with four assists too.

Throw in 27 goals from 48 games in all competitions last year – Serie A’s top scorer – and it’s quickly evident how well the Argentine has developed at the San Siro in the last two seasons.

Inter have stagnated in recent times, and will again head into next year without Champions League football, something that could aid Icardi’s decision in choosing his next destination.

It’s believed Arsenal could complete a deal for around £25m, and for a man whose best years are still to come, that could prove very shrewd business.
