All aboard the McIlroy express at Wells Fargo Championship

The Wells Fargo Championship is a special tournament for Rory McIlroy. It was the scene of his first ever PGA Tour victory six years ago and is a competition he always fares well in.
The Northern Irishman then added a second triumph to his 2010 win at the North Carolina event last year. In doing so he became the only player to ever win multiple Wells Fargo titles.
That latest success also landed McIlroy the record of the tournament’s biggest margin of victory, grabbing the honour with the lowest winning total ever seen at the Quail Hollow Club showpiece.
In between those two wins, the Holywood star has appeared at his favourite event four times. He has finished inside the top 10 on three occasions and was runner up in 2012.
Clearly, the Ryder Cup icon is the one to beat when the 2016 season arrives in Charlotte for the latest renewal.
It is therefore unsurprising that McIlroy is the runaway favourite with Ladbrokes, priced up at 4/1. His closest competitor according to the market is Dustin Johnson, who is a whopping ten points bigger to win at odds of 14s.
That illustrates just how dominant the 26-year-old is expected to be this week and for once there really is little to dissuade investing in him.
In addition to his formidable course form, he arrives on the back of two top-10 finishes on tour, the most recent coming at the Masters.
For those that really can’t bring themselves to back such a short-price favourite, Phil Mickelson is another consistent performer at the Quail Hollow Club. He has landed in the top 10 in eight of his 12 appearances since 2004 and is a solid each-way play at 25/1.
On the European Tour, where Morocco plays host to the Trophee Hassan II, the field is far more open.
Alexander Levy and Alejandro Canizares share favouritism at 14/1, but it’s 40/1-chance David Horsey that demands most attention.
The Englishman is yet to finish worse than 17th at the event since winning the title in 2011.
