Accession is our pick to continue big-price Victoria Cup trend

Published:

There’s a bumper nine-race Channel 4 Racing card to enjoy this weekend with action from Ascot, Haydock and Lingfield taking centre stage.

We’re expecting plenty of Classic clues and big handicap pointers to be revealed and hopefully, with the help of our tips, we’ll give you cause for celebration too.

The Victoria Cup in Berkshire and a hot Derby trial in Surrey are your highlights and we’ve got selections for both of those contests and an added extra.

Get stuck in and remember it’s Money Back if 2nd or 3rd to the SP Favourite on all Channel 4 races!*

NAP – Ch’Tibello – Haydock 14:15

There are plenty of progressive types waiting to pounce in this race but it’s the favourite who makes the most appeal to us.

Dan Skelton’s charge survived a last-flight scare to take the Grade 2 Scottish Champion Hurdle on his previous outing and if avoiding any danger should have enough in hand to see off his latest rivals.

Ch’Tibello wasn’t too far behind subsequent Supreme Novices’ Hurdle winner Altior last year and more recent form suggests that performance was no flash in the pan.

NB – Winning Story – Lingfield 16:10

There have been plenty of good vibes coming from trainer Saeed bin Suroor with the Godolphin trainer more than happy with his jolly’s recent work at home.

He was pretty pleased to see Winning Story oblige on debut at Newmarket’s Craven Meeting too, and while this contest will be over a slightly longer trip, we have no concerns.

Elsewhere, Carntop was a decent maiden winner at Newmarket last October, Across the Stars has course form and Landofhopeandglory can’t be ruled out given his trainer’s impressive record in the race.

But we don’t think any of those others mentioned will be able to land a blow here.

Lively Longshot – Accession – Ascot 16:15

Given recent trends it seems reasonable to opt for a big-priced runner in this contest. Seven of the last nine winners have obliged at double figure odds so we’re swerving the favourite and opting for one further down the list.

Accession was an eye-catching six-length winner at Newbury last time out and trainer Charlie Fellowes feels that victory and this outing will be the perfect stepping-stone towards Royal Ascot.

Ascot’s seven furlong trip and the likely fast ground aren’t likely to cause any problems and neither will the big field with two of our selection’s six career victories coming in races with 13 runners or more.
