WATCH: Forfar Athletic beat Peterhead to boost survival hopes
Forfar Athletic are enjoying their home comforts right now, with the Angus club collecting 11 points from their last five home games to offer renewed hope in the club’s battle against the Ladbrokes League 1 drop.
Visitors Peterhead boasted the division’s top scorer before this game, in 22-goal man Rory McAllister, and the Blue Toon are the only side to have three players who have reached double figures in this League 1 campaign.
However, they were shut out by a Loons side who controlled possession and had the game’s best chances, on a cloudy afternoon at Station Park.
After a cagy first half from both sides, Danny Denholm opened the scoring for Forfar on 47 minutes, pouncing on a rebound to tap home from close range, following a fantastic diving save from the unfortunate Peterhead ‘keeper Graeme Smith.
The Blue Toon gave their hosts a brief second-half scare, with a free-kick which cannoned off the bar, but veteran striker Steven Craig struck his seventh goal of the season in the 54th minute to dampen Peterhead’s hopes.
And following Craig’s neat finish from inside the six-yard-box, the Aberdeenshire club rarely threatened again.
Denholm failed to put the gloss on the scoreline for the hosts, heading a close-range effort wide of the post in the latter stages, but that hardly mattered.
This was a huge win for the Loons, especially with eight-placed Cowdenbeath and bottom club Brechin City both recording victories.
For Peterhead, it’s successive defeats for the first time since May 2015, though the Blue Toon are already guaranteed a play-off spot.
Forfar travel to champions Dunfermline Athletic on Saturday and are 8/1 to claim a victory at East End Park.
