WATCH: Dunlop goal keeps Albion Rovers promotion dream alive

Published:

Albion Rovers recorded a first Ladbrokes League 1 victory in nine attempts against Ayr, with Michael Dunlop’s goal enough to give the Wee Rovers their first win at Somerset Park since 2009 on Saturday.

Gary Fisher’s free-kick was intelligently headed down by Scott McBride, finding veteran defender Dunlop in space, and his volleyed effort rocketed into the United net via a deflection.

The Honest Men may feel unfortunate to have lost a very even contest, but after slipping out of the play-off places, it’s a welcome return to form for Albion.

Darren Young’s team are now just three points behind Stranraer, with the Stair Park club occupying the final play-off spot.

Ayr United, meanwhile, have already secured their post-season spot, with strikers Craig Moore and Jordan Preston having both hit double figures in this Ladbrokes League 1 campaign.

The Ayrshire club will be looking to return to winning ways this weekend, though, as they look to make up ground on second-placed Peterhead. United travel to Stenhousemuir and the visitors are evens to secure all three points.

Rovers, meanwhile, host Cowdenbeath – a side they beat 2-1 in the last meeting at Cliftonhill in November.

The hosts are 21/20 to win and increase the pressure on Stranraer.
