Sometimes the cards just fall your way, and for Nico Rosberg that’s certainly been the case thus far in 2016 Formula One season.
The Mercedes man serenely drove to victory at the weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix – his sixth in a row – as team-mate and three-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton endured another difficult afternoon.
Having seen Hamilton hit trouble and Ferrari fail to make the most of their speed this year, Rosberg has been in the right place at the right time to win all three races.
The 30-year-old now holds 36-point lead over his title rival, and the history books now say the German is destined to be 2016 champion.
Since the sport’s inception in 1950, every man who has won the opening trio of races has gone on to be that year’s champion.
Even the bookies now fancy Rosberg to end Hamilton’s reign as king, with 4/6 saying the German driver emulates his father Keke by becoming world champion this season.
Hamilton is now the outsider at 11/8, a price that’s sure to attract plenty of attention with 18 races remaining.
But the Brit will be desperate to arrest a trying opening to the year.
A poor getaway saw him ousted by Rosberg in Australia, and after being hit by Valtteri Bottas in Bahrain, Hamilton was again in first-corner woe in China when he collided with Felipe Nasr after starting from the back of the grid.
Hamilton himself has admitted he can’t afford any more bad luck, but only twice since 2003 has a driver claimed the world championship after failing to win any of the opening three rounds.
Statistics, history and even the odds all favour Nico Rosberg right now, but maybe that’s exactly why you should back Lewis Hamilton…
