Super League: Points aplenty and Jonny’s joy headline in round 12

Attack was king in the latest round of Super League, with over 400 points were scored across the six fixtures at an average of 67 points per game.
While Thursday’s game between Wigan and Huddersfield harvested a meagre 45 points (in comparison with the rest of the round’s ties), Super League was at its free-scoring best from Friday onwards.
The highest scorers of the round were surprisingly Hull KR, who ran in 11 tries on their way to a stunning 58-16 win away at Castleford, making amends for their Ladbrokes Challenge Cup humiliation against Oldham last week.
Rovers were as big as 9/2 to beat the Tigers before the match, but they surprised everyone by recording their third win of the season, leapfrogging Leeds Rhinos into 10th spot in the process.
Leeds themselves played their part in a classic encounter on Friday as they went down 38-34 to St Helens.
That tie featured the biggest personal story of the weekend as Jonny Lomax returned to the Saints side after 13 months out of action with a serious knee injury. The full-back scored a brace on his comeback, a perfect night for a player who just months ago didn’t know whether he would ever play again.
Wigan went top of the league briefly on Thursday night after completing a hard-fought 26-19 victory over bottom club Huddersfield. It may not have had the points of the other ties, but it wasn’t short of action as Wigan required a late Dan Sarginson try to see off a dogged Giants outfit after the sides had been locked at 19-19 going into the closing stages.
Warrington made sure Wigan’s stay at the top was short-lived thanks to a convincing 48-16 win over local rivals Widnes. Kevin Penny, Joe Westerman and Stefan Ratchford all crossed twice as Tony Smith’s side got their first win in three games.
Catalans made it a three-way split at the top of the table, but were made to work hard to see off Salford Red Devils 42-32 in Perpignan on Saturday night. Jodie Broughton’s rich vein of form continued as he crossed for two tries against his former club, as did former Red Devil Richie Myler.
Meanwhile, Wakefield’s winning streak came to an end at the hands of Hull FC, as the Airlie Birds kept the gap between themselves and the top three to just two points with a 46-28 win – Fetuli Talanoa grabbing the headlines with four tries for the Black and Whites.
