PSG throw Manchester United a Jose Mourinho curveball

Published:

The internet had a little meltdown this morning with reports from far and wide stating PSG have approached Jose Mourinho about taking over from Laurent Blanc next season.

Mourinho has been linked with the Manchester United job for years, and speculation has only increased this year following the Portuguese’s departure from Chelsea, coupled with Louis van Gaal’s continued struggles at Old Trafford.

But with Blanc under pressure after failing to take the Parisian side to Champions League glory, PSG are now just 6/4 to be Jose’s next club, in from 10/1 just weeks ago.

United still top the betting at 10/11 and some may sceptically wonder if all this is just a ploy by Jose to force the Red Devils’ hand.

A return to Inter Milan is 7/1 with the battle increasingly looking like a two-horse race for Jose’s services.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “We were so sure Mourinho was Manchester-bound that we closed the book and starting counting the money to pay out. The betting suggests PSG have emerged as a serious threat and it’s now a distinct possibility they gazump Ed Woodward and co at the last minute.”

United will hope to put all this speculation behind them – for 90 minutes at least – when they host Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

For all of their troubles this term, the Reds could still land a Champions League spot, but victory over Alan Pardew’s Eagles will be essential to achieving that aim.

It’s 1/2 Van Gaal’s men grab three points, while Palace are 6/1 for a win that would heap yet more pressure on the Dutchman, with Jose lurking in the shadows.

Unless of course he’s off to Paris…
