Poll Reaction: Atletico Madrid will win La Liga this season

Published:

Barcelona suffered Champions League heartbreak at the hands of Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, and they’re set to be pipped again by the Rojiblancos in the La Liga battle.

That’s according to our latest Twitter poll, with the men from the Vicente Calderon having gained 43 per cent of the vote, when asked who will be Spanish champions this season.

Having won their last three league games, against Espanyol, Barca and Granada respectively, second-placed Atleti are now only behind the Catalan club on goal difference.

Barcelona may still be top of the table, but only 29 per cent of you are tipping the Nou Camp club to secure a 24th Spanish league crown, a figure which reflects the dreadful run of form the team find themselves on.

It’s three defeats on the trot in La Liga for Luis Enrique’s charges, and the illustrious MSN attack have managed only one goal between them in that time. But they’ve snuck into second place, with a sizeable number of voters following the adage that ‘form is temporary, class is permanent’.

Real Madrid round out the list with 28 per cent, though it’s far from guaranteed that Los Biancos will end the season in third-place.

They’re just a point between both their nearest and fiercest rivals, and boast the talents of runaway top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo, with the three-time Ballon d’Or winner having netted 31 times in the competition (and counting).

It’s clear that many fans still believe the Portuguese can help bring league glory to the Bernabeu this season, but more still believe the title is heading across the city and into the hands of Atleti captain Gabi.

Barcelona, though, are 1/2 to lift the La Liga crown, with Atletico next best at 3/1 and Real narrowly pipped into third spot (as in our poll!) at 4/1.
