Official: David de Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world

He has been in inspired form for Manchester United this season and David de Gea can go into this year’s FA Cup final confident in the knowledge that he is the best goalkeeper in world football.

That is according to our latest poll which gave the Twittersphere four stellar options to choose from.

On the back of Joe Hart’s potentially tie-saving stop against Real Madrid last night we asked our Twitter followers to vote for the world’s best, pitting the England and Manchester City ace against United’s De Gea, Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer and Juventus star Gianluigi Buffon and with 48 per cent the Old Trafford fan favourite was the clear winner.

Neuer, often dubbed the sweeper-keeper as a result of his penchant for playing high up the pitch, was second favourite, with 35 per cent, leaving the remaining two competitors in his wake.

Buffon, still the world’s most expensive ‘keeper following his €53m move from Parma in 2001, has no doubt been considered the number one man between the sticks at various points throughout his 21-year professional career but the 38-year-old had to make do with third place and 11 per cent of the votes.

Unfortunately for Hart, who has cemented his place as England’s number one, he has to make do with being the world’s number four, taking home just six per cent of the overall vote.

City’s last line of defence will potentially be back in action this weekend as the Sky Blues travel to Southampton.

However, at 13/5 to keep a clean sheet it seems that either Hart will be rested or the traders don’t fancy his chances of performing another shut out ahead of next week’s trip to the Bernabeu.
