No surprises in New York as Donald Trump seeks clean sweep

He’s suffered blows to Republican rival Ted Cruz in recent weeks, but Donald Trump is set to roar back into life as New York prepares to cast its votes for this year’s Presidential candidates on Tuesday.
Wins for Cruz in Utah, Wisconsin, Colorado and Wyoming had threatened to dent Trump’s race to run for the GOP, but his rival was always expected to struggle in the Big Apple.
The real estate mogul is keen to wrap up his nomination before July’s convention and so New York – offering the fourth highest number of delegates at 95 – could prove key.
There’s a chance the former US Apprentice host could sweep the whole lot, should he grab the majority across each of NYC’s 27 congressional districts.
If he doesn’t, then Cruz and fellow contender John Kasich could stem the damage.
Brooklyn-born and raised, New York was always expected to be a Trump-stronghold, and he’s seemingly eased off the controversial statements in recent weeks too.
But even so, opinion on ‘The Donald’ across New York Republicans is divided, and that division could prove enough to slow Trump steamrolling his way to the full delegates on offer.
It’s 5/6 that Trump claims over 52.5 of the Republican vote share on Tuesday, where a win would significantly boost his 4/6 odds of running for the White House in November.
Cruz is second favourite at 9/4, but with early polls also suggesting Trump is in line for victory in Pennsylvania and California, this could be the beginning of the end for the 45-year-old.
The Texas Junior Senator’s only hope is that he grabs enough delegates here and there to deny Trump reaching the required 1,237.
From there Cruz could still have a chance of being nominated at July’s party convention, so although a Trump win in New York is all but given, it’s the margin of victory which could prove key.
