Man United legend could head home to his boyhood club

With Jose Mourinho seemingly set to arrive at Manchester United with plans to shake up their squad this summer, it’s looking increasingly likely that Wayne Rooney will be returning to the club where his career began.

Many Everton fans have been dreaming of a Rooney return at Goodison Park – especially after he donned a Toffees shirt for Duncan Ferguson’s last summer.

And the odds of a homecoming for the Croxteth-born striker have been slashed from 8/1 to 4/1, following a flurry of bets.

A fervent Evertonian, the 30-year-old played 77 times for the club he supported before that record-breaking move to Manchester.

Transfermarkt currently value the Red Devils star at £30m, but with a sizeable fee set to arrive from whoever wins the bidding race for the red-hot Romelu Lukaku, it’s unlikely the Toffees would struggle to meet such a price.

And, if Mourinho decides Rooney is surplus to requirements, the experienced hitman may well be available for a significantly smaller fee.

Man United are next in action against champions-elect Leicester City at Old Trafford, with the home side evens to win, and the Foxes 14/5 to get the victory which confirms them as Premier League champions.

Everton, meanwhile, are 20/21 to best Bournemouth on Merseyside.
