Liverpool thrashing moves Martinez closer to Everton exit

Published:

The pressure was on Everton boss Roberto Martinez before last night’s derby with Liverpool, but after the Reds ran out easy 4-0 victors at Anfield, it’s becoming a matter of when not if the Spaniard will depart the blue half of Merseyside.

It’s 1/6 Martinez leaves before the start of next season, and it’s just 3/1 he isn’t even in charge by the time Everton play Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final this weekend.

Former Toffee David Moyes tops the betting to be Martinez’s replacement at 4/1, with Marcelo Bielsa 6/1 to make his Premier League bow at Goodison Park.

Looking for a new employer next season, current Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is also in the mix at 10s, with another ex-Citizen Roberto Mancini a 12/1 shot.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “It was always looking likely Martinez would move on this summer but the derby result has shortened the odds of an even swifter exit.

“As far as a replacement is concerned, Moyes is still the front runner although Pellegrini is also proving a popular bet.”

Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe is 12/1, while outsiders include Goodison favourite Duncan Ferguson and Jurgen Klinnsman, both at 20s.

Should Martinez lead his side out at Wembley, they’re 5/2 to see off Louis van Gaal’s Red Devils inside 90 minutes, while the Toffees are 13/10 to qualify for the final.

Defeat for the Blues however – United are favourites at 11/10 in 90 minutes – and time will surely be ticking on Martinez’s exit on a tenure of unfulfilled potential.
