Liverpool could make Arsenal pay for releasing gifted midfielder

Published:

According to a report first published in the South London press, Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool are chasing the same teenage talent.

This story reveals nothing unusual on the surface, except that this particular plot comes with a twist.

Regan Charles-Cook is a Charlton Athletic midfielder whose displays for the Addicks U21s have prompted interest from these more illustrious suitors.

The interesting part of this particular scouting mission, is that the Gunners are well familiar with Charles-Cook.

The midfielder, part of a burgeoning football dynasty alongside brothers Anthony and Reice who currently play for Ebbsfleet and Coventry respectively, was actually on Arsenal’s books previously.

The Lewisham-born lad was released from the Emirates in 2013.

Charlton picked Charles-Cook up in 2015 and he’s since signed his first professional contract, making four appearances for the Championship strugglers this season, albeit three of those in cup competitions.

His lack of first-team football hasn’t discouraged scouts of his former club and Liverpool though.

It’s reported that the two Premier League big guns may be ready to fight it out for his signature in the summer.

Of course Liverpool have already had success in signing another promising Addicks youth in the shape of defender Joe Gomez during last summer’s transfer window, which could stand them in good stead for negotiations.

It remains to be seen whether Charles-Cook feels he has something to prove at Arsenal or whether he is more inclined to snub the Gunners for a lack of faith in his abilities.

He may of course be happy to stay put at Charlton, although the South Londoners look League One-bound.

All Odds and Markets are correct as of the date of publishing.
