Ladbrokes SPFL: Airdrieonians closing in on play-off berth

Another action-packed weekend of SPFL football took place over the weekend and while Rangers finally got their hands on the Ladbrokes Championship trophy it was in the lower leagues where the intrigue grew.

While the Championship stayed pretty much the same after the latest round of results several teams are jostling for position in Leagues 1 and 2, with the play-off picture still far from clear.

Here’s your round-up of all the action from the second, third and fourth tiers…

Ladbrokes Championship

Rangers may have lifted the trophy in front of an ecstatic Ibrox crowd but Alloa did their bit to temper the mood by going ahead through on-loan Celtic striker Michael Duffy.

James Tavernier restored parity, however, and the draw means the Light Blues remain on course to finish the season unbeaten at home.

Elsewhere, St Mirren swapping places with Queen of the South, in sixth and seventh place respectively, was the only change in the table. Saints went down 2-1 to Dumbarton meaning the Doonhamers’ 3-1 win over Livingston saw them move up.

The remaining two games finished all square, with Morton and Hibs playing out a bore draw and Raith and Falkirk locked together at 2-2.

Ladbrokes League 1

As the headline suggests Airdrieonians were the biggest beneficiaries of the weekend’s results with their 3-0 win over Champions Dunfermline leaving them just two points of the play-off places.

Ayr boosted their own post-season hopes with a 4-0 away routing of Peterhead moving them up to second.

Elsewhere there were home wins for Albion Rovers and Brechin City, beating Forfar and Stranraer 3-2 and 1-0 respectively, while Stenhousemuir secured a richly-deserved three points with a 3-1 win away at Cowdenbeath.

Ladbrokes League 2

Queen’s Park and Elgin were the winners this weekend with the Spiders’ 2-1 win over Clyde pushing them up to second and seeing Barry Ferguson’s men drop down to fourth.

Elgin are now up to third after a 3-0 away win over East Stirling which leaves the Shire eight points adrift at the foot of the table and staring into the abyss.

Elsewhere, Annan Athletic dropped down to eighth place after a 2-1 defeat away at Stirling, while East Fife were humbled 2-0 away to Berwick Rangers and Arbroath and Montrose settled for a point apiece after a goalless affair at Gayfield Park.
