Huddersfield hoping to defy the odds at Wigan

They may be separated by 12 points in the table, but lowly Huddersfield Giants will be hopeful of pushing Wigan Warriors close tonight.

In a repeat of last year’s Super League play-off semi-final, the 3rd-placed Warriors host bottom-placed Giants at the DW Stadium following altogether different starts to the season.

Wigan have won eight of their first 11 fixtures, while the Giants – who finished third last season – only picked up their second win of the campaign last week.

It was, however, an impressive 11-0 victory over league leaders Warrington, which will undoubtedly give the Giants confidence that they can spring another upset at the DW Stadium tonight, where they are 5/2 outsiders to win.

Wigan (1/3 to win tonight) remain without a number of key players, including Sam Tomkins, Liam Farrell, Sean O’Loughlin and Michael McIlorum, while Giants coach Paul Anderson has kept faith with the same 19 that surprised Warrington last week, meaning there is no place for Eorl Crabtree.

An under-strength Huddersfield side pushed Wigan close earlier in the season, before a late Josh Charnley try sunk the Giants. Huddersfield were leading at half-time in that tie, and it is 13/2 the Giants throw away another half-time lead to lose this time around.

One constant over the past 18 months for Huddersfield has been the consistency of wingman Jermaine McGillvary, who has nine tries in his last eight games. His opposite number Josh Charnley has 13 tries in 12 games against the Giants and they are paired together in the Ladbrokes Enhanced Anytime Tryscorer Double, boosted from 15/8 to 5/2 to both score tonight.

After ending a five-game losing streak last week, Huddersfield will be hoping their season has finally got going. They managed to nil the free-scoring Wolves last week and will be confident of covering the +10 handicap (10/11) against Wigan tonight.
