Free Agents: Where next for these five football stars?

While many of the game’s top names have pledged their future to their current club, a number of world-famous names and emerging talents are out of contract this summer and looking for a new challenge. Here’s where five of the most notable names are most likely to be heading.

Michael Carrick (Age: 34 / Current Club: Manchester United)

At 34-years-old, the best years of Carrick’s career are surely behind him – but the England international still has much to offer, not least in his experience and intelligent reading of the game.

After almost a decade at Old Trafford, which has included a Champions League winners’ medal and several Premier League titles, the veteran midfielder looks set to leave this summer, with Everton the frontrunners at 7/2 to secure his services.

Francesco Totti (Age: 39 / Current Club: Roma)

While Carrick’s Old Trafford tenure has been a long one, it pales in comparison to the 23 years Francesco Totti has spent in the Roma first team, since his debut against Brescia in 1993.

Now 39, the Champions League’s oldest ever goalscorer has shown no sign of hanging up his boots and may be about to make the first move of his long career.

Out of contract at the end of this Serie A campaign, the Rome-born hitman is 5/2 to join any MLS club, while a switch to the Chinese Super League is priced at 5/1.

Tom Carroll (Age: 22 / Current Club: Tottenham)

While Harry Kane and Dele Alli have stolen most of the headlines during Tottenham’s title tilt this season, fellow young talent Tom Carroll has been quietly impressive for the north London club, both at home and in Europe.

With three goals this season and a number of excellent displays under his belt, the 22-year-old midfielder is out of contract in the summer, and numerous Premier League clubs are interested in acquiring the Watford native.

Swansea City – where Carroll spent part of last season on loan – are the frontrunners at 4/1, with Championship promotion hopefuls Derby County second-favourites at 6/1.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Age: 34 / Current Club: PSG)

While Zlatan’s midweek equaliser against Manchester City in the Champions League wasn’t the best goal he has scored this season, the PSG man can take heart in the fact it has 38 contenders (and counting) for that accolade.

Having struck an incredible 39 goals in 42 games this season, the Swedish hitman has been instrumental in PSG’s almost unprecedented stroll to the Ligue 1 title. But at 34, the well-travelled striker looks likely to head for the eighth club of his career.

With talk of a move to Manchester United growing, we’ve cut the odds on Zlatan heading to Old Trafford to 7/4.

Hatem Ben Arfa (Age: 29 / Current Club: Nice)

While Zlatan is backed by a world-class midfield at PSG, the success of Nice this season has been largely down to one man – Ben Arfa.

Temperamental but undoubtedly talented, the former Newcastle winger’s one-year contract with Les Aiglons is due to expire in the summer.

Following a sensational return of 16 goals in 29 Ligue 1 games which has helped Nice clamber into the European qualification places, big name clubs are keen to pounce for the France international. PSG and Liverpool are level at 5/1 to sign the 29-year-old, with Manchester United 10/1 to make Ben Arfa a Red Devil.
