Frankie Dettori: My rides have a great chance in the Guineas

Published:

Guineas weekend is upon us and I can’t wait to head to Newmarket for the first Classics of the season.

It looks like I’m going to ride Galileo Gold and Nathra in the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas respectively.

Any rain is welcome because they both like getting their toe in. I was afraid that were there to be good to firm ground they might not come down the dip but given the forecast I can see the ground being good or softer.

1000 Guineas is Minding’s to lose

My ride Nathra won her trial at Newmarket and is in good form. She’s got four-and-a-half lengths to make up on Minding but she’s solid enough and will run a good race.

We’re expecting her to finish in the first three. She’s done nothing wrong and we’ve got nothing to lose this weekend.

You could argue the race is Minding’s to lose as she’s shown she’s the best filly around.

Realistically we could witness an Aidan O’Brien double with two big favourites. They come into their races in the best form but we’ll hope that our horses can close the gap.

AFB the one to beat but we’re expecting a big race from Galileo Gold

I’m very pleased with the progress Galileo Gold has made throughout the winter and I’m expecting him to run a big race and hopefully at least run into a place.

Of course, on last year’s form Air Force Blue stands out. He was by far the best two-year-old but if there’s anything amiss with the favourite then we’ve got a great chance.

The good thing about the Guineas is that it’s been six months since these horses have run so no one really knows how they’ve been getting on and it’s all to play for.

We’ll be taking on a very smart favourite but we’re going to give it a good go.

Dahlia looks super competitive

The toughest race to call is probably the Dahlia. It’s a very competitive race with the likes of Amazing Maria set to line-up.

I’ll be on Jazzi Top once again. Her homework has been good and she wears her heart on her sleeve, she always tries really hard. I’m hoping for another good run.

She goes into the race as a leading fancy but given the make-up of the field she’ll need to run a career best.

Pretty Polly will reveal a lot about Swiss Range

Swiss Range won her maiden really well by five lengths and the obvious next step was the Pretty Polly.

She is still yet to fill out her big frame but she’s in the right race and this could be a stepping stone to the Ribblesdale if she wins this.

She showed good progress first time out and will be a real player this weekend.

This is a good race to give yourself an idea of where your filly is in terms of the Classic trail.

Fingers crossed we’ll get some action.

Good luck!

Frankie.
