Derby v Sheff Weds: Owls still seeking one more win

Published:

Derby host Sheffield Wednesday in today’s lunch-time kick-off, and while the Rams may be guaranteed some play-off drama, their Yorkshire opponents still need a win to be sure of joining the party.

With nine points left to play for, Darren Wassall’s County could technically still make automatic promotion, but with Burnley and Brighton eight points up ahead, it’s rather unlikely.

For Wednesday, they’re six ahead of Cardiff, and while that’s a pretty safe margin, the Welsh side host relegated Bolton so the Owls can’t take any chances.

Especially considering Carlos Carvalhal’s team have picked up just two points from the last nine available.

Derby are 21/20 for three points, with the visitors 13/5, while a repeat of December’s draw between the teams is 23/10.

The Rams have been pretty handy on home soil of late, winning each of their last five. They kept four straight clean sheets too until Bolton managed to put one past them a fortnight ago.

Wednesday have proved potent enough on the road however, finding the net in 15 of their 21 away league games thus far.

With that in mind, we’re boosting Derby to win and both teams to score from 3/1 to 4/1.

But if you don’t fancy that offer, the hosts to keep a clean sheet is 6/4, while it’s 10/11 if you fancy both teams to grab a goal.

After bagging six in nine games, Derby’s Chris Martin has gone three without a goal, but you can back the striker to end that run by grabbing the game’s opener at 7/2.

Thomas Ince is 11/2 to grab the first goal, and the winger has scored in two of his last three appearances, but Derby’s form man is Johnny Russell.

The Scot has scored four in his last three games, scoring the opener each time and you can back him to do so once again at 6/1.

Wednesday’s hopes may rest on Fernando Forestieri, who has responded superbly after being dismissed in successive matches back in February.

The  Italian has netted three times in his last six, including the opening goal twice, and it’s 6/1 he does the same again this afternoon.
