Can Man United benefit from Barcelona star’s deal stalemate?
Manchester United could make a shock bid for Spain midfielder Sergio Busquets this summer, according to reports.
Spanish publication Fichajes, claims Busquets, 27, has reached a stalemate with the Catalan giants during negotiations over an improved deal.
The player’s current contract runs until 2019 but it is believed that Busquets has demanded a salary to match that of defender Gerard Pique and striker Luis Suarez.
Barcelona chiefs have not responded to his request as yet and United are understood to be monitoring the situation with a view to making a summer bid.
As a midfielder the right side of 30 and with five La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey wins, three Champions League triumphs, a World Cup and European Championship to his name few players in the game come with better credentials.
And, with United’s midfield lynchpin Michael Carrick entering the twilight of his career and potentially heading for the Old Trafford exit door this summer, the timing is right for the Red Devils to make a move.
United’s ability to lure Busquets to England, however, will depend largely on whether or not they can offer the midfielder Champions League football.
Louis van Gaal’s men currently trail Manchester City by just a single point in the race to reach the top four but with a trip to White Hart Lane to face an in-form Tottenham side this weekend that gap could yet widen.
United go into the match as 3/1 outsiders, with Spurs billed as 10/11 favourites and the draw available at 12/5 and anything less than three points could scupper United European dream and any chance of landing the Barca star.
