Wigan to Walsall: Huge Weekend Ahead in League One Promotion Race

Published:

Last weekend provided more than its fair share of drama in the League One promotion push.

Walsall overcame Colchester with a 94th-minute winner from defender Matt Preston while imperious Burton Albion put four goals past Port Vale in Staffordshire.

Wigan Athletic also squeezed past Bradford City with a late 1-0 win, as City were replaced in the playoff places by Barnsley, who benefited from an unfortunate own goal by Fleetwood’s Joe Davis.

So, what’s ahead on this long weekend packed with League One double-headers?

There are two tricky assignments for second-placed Wigan Athletic. They face Swindon, who boast the division’s top scorer, in 20-goal Nicky Ajose. That is followed by a derby game against Rochdale, who have won three of their last four matches.

Gillingham were the pace-setters in the opening months, and face Bury this weekend. Justin Edinburgh’s Gills have been solid at the back, having conceded just once in three games. However, with just one win in six, more goals are needed for the Priestfield club to reignite their challenge for automatic promotion.

On-form Millwall are many people’s tip for a late push, and it’s easy to see why. Unbeaten in six, the Lions face promotion hopefuls Bradford City on Saturday, and then host title favourites Burton Albion on Monday night. This may well be the biggest weekend of Millwall’s season.

Coventry City, meanwhile, have struggled recently, but with talented Newcastle United loanee Adam Armstrong in their ranks, they could grab all three points against a patchy Peterborough side to keep the dream of Championship football next season alive.

Barnsley are also in the hunt and they host mid-table Scunthorpe and Port Vale over the Easter weekend, ahead of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final on April 3.

Whether you’re backing hot favourites Burton or going for an outsider like 66/1 Scunthorpe United, we’ve got you covered with great League One promotion odds.
