Widnes, Warrington and Wigan prove the early pace-setters

Widnes Vikings, Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors remain the teams to beat in Super League, as victories for all three in the latest round leave them joint top of the table with ten points.

Widnes’ blistering start to the season continued with a nine-try 46-6 demolition of Hull FC on Thursday night, inspired once again by their captain Kevin Brown, who continues to be widely backed for an England recall.

Denis Betts’ side have proven themselves to be incredibly dangerous in attack – they are the league’s top scorers by 42 points, albeit having played a game more than most of their rivals – and are almost unbeatable on home soil. Their new signings have also proved their worth already, with winger Corey Thompson taking no time at all to adapt to the English game, topping the league’s try scoring charts with 10 from just 6 games.

Fellow joint table-toppers Warrington and Wigan, meanwhile, remain the only unbeaten sides in the division, both recording victories over the weekend.

Wigan got a little revenge for their 2015 Grand Final defeat by comfortably beating Leeds 28-6 to move level on points with Widnes and continue Leeds’ poor start to the season.

Warrington travelled to Perpignan on Saturday to face Catalans, who were favourites to come away with the two points.

But, Tony Smith’s side came from 20-12 down to come out 30-20 victors and claim their fifth successive win. Chris Sandow was again key – having a hand in two tries and scoring one himself – proving as important to the Wolves as Brown is to Widnes.

St Helens kept the gap between themselves and the joint table-toppers to just two points by thrashing coach-less Wakefield 44-4 at Langtree Park on Friday night, crossing for 30 unanswered first-half points in the process.

In the battle of the bottom two Huddersfield comprehensively saw off Hull KR 38-6 to claim their first points of the season and leave Rovers in bottom place – while Salford bounced back from their last-gasp defeat last week with an impressive 32-16 win away at Castleford, with ex-Tigers Josh Griffin and Justin Carney both scoring a brace of tries for the Red Devils, who sit fifth in the table.
