WATCH: Josh Todd wondergoal caps off five-star Annan win in Montrose

Published:

A sensational display from Annan Athletic heaped misery on Paul Hegarty’s Montrose side in Angus last weekend, with the visitors running out 5-0 winners in this Ladbrokes League 2 fixture.

The Gable Endies held out for 20 minutes against title-chasing Annan until the visitors opened the scoring through a well-struck penalty from Peter Weatherson.

The veteran Englishman doubled the lead in first half injury time when he pounced on a misplaced pass from Terry Masson to make it 2-0 to the Galabankies.

The visitors began the second half as they had finished the first, and Matthew Flynn pounced on the ball after a smart save from Jordan Millar, to lash home the rebound just before the hour.

Todd sealed the points after snapping up another rebound, before embarking on a mazy solo run to score a fantastic fifth goal in the final minute of normal time.

Wins for Berwick Rangers and Arbroath mean Montrose drop to ninth place, ahead of basement dwellers East Stirlingshire on goal difference only.

The result at Links Park propelled Annan back into the playoff spots, with the borders club now just five points off the Ladbrokes League 2 summit, and 8/1 to win the title.

Montrose travel to second-placed Clyde this weekend, and are 19/5 to beat Barry Ferguson’s charges.

The chance to back in-form Annan at 2/1 to win is likely to interest many, as they visit an Elgin City side without a victory in their last three games.

Montrose will be hoping for another slip-up from East Stirling who have lost their last five fixtures and are 8/5 to beat Berwick Rangers this weekend.

With the promotion race and the battle to avoid the relegation play-offs heating up, things could hardly be more exciting in League 2 right now.
