Voters say there’s no place on the plane for Rooney and Milner

Wayne Rooney and James Milner are not worth a place in Roy Hodgson’s England squad, as the likes of Dele Alli and Jamie Vardy staked their claim in the terrific 3-2 win over Germany in Berlin.

That’s the view from today’s Twitter poll, which asked whether England’s record goalscorer Rooney and 57-cap man Milner were worthy of a spot in the Euro 2016 squad. 34 per cent of you voted to leave both players at home, the highest percentage of the vote.

Rooney has struggled for form and fitness in recent times, whilst Milner has failed to impress some fans during his time in a Three Lions shirt.

The former has increasingly tough competition from a talented young crop of England strikers, who many consider to be the national team’s future.

Harry Kane, who struck the first of England’s three goals in Berlin has 21 Premier League goals this season. Jamie Vardy meanwhile, has 19, whilst Rooney has mustered just seven.

Milner is also facing competition from a generation of thriving young players in midfield. Eric Dier has been on imperious form for Spurs and struck England’s winner in Germany, whilst Jordan Henderson is returning to top form after injury troubles.

Still, 28 per cent of voters plumped for taking both Milner and Rooney to France. Both have huge experience and are still regulars for clubs in the Premier League’s top half.

Meanwhile, 18 per cent opted to take Milner but omit the Manchester United man, with 20 per cent pledging their support to just Rooney making the squad.

Will Roy Hodgson side with the biggest group of voters on this issue, and abandon household names for the bright young stars who overcame Germany last weekend?
