Vardy’s Berlin stunner can put Leicester fans at ease

Published:

While England fans flew into euphoric delight as Jamie Vardy cheekily back-heeled past super stopper Manuel Neuer to bring the Three Lions level in Berlin last weekend, a few Leicester fans will have breathed a sigh of relief.

For having led the Premier League goal race for much of the season, a personal barren spell of one strike in seven had seen England colleague Harry Kane usurp Vardy in the Golden Boot battle.

There’s no question Vardy has continued to play the team game, playing a crucial role with Leicester picking up a succession of 1-0 wins over the past eight weeks or so, but the 29-year-old’s delightfully instinctive finish on Saturday was a great reminder that he hasn’t lost his edge in front of goal.

It could also be the moment that sparks the former Fleetwood man back into Premier League-goal-busting life, as his Leicester side chase a famous title.

Currently two goals shy of Kane in the goalscorer fight, the 4/1 on the Foxes man to claim this season’s award is the striker’s biggest price for almost three months and it could be time to get on the Vardy bandwagon once again.

Both sides face some difficult fixtures in the remaining seven games of the season, but with Tottenham up against Liverpool and Manchester United in the next two weeks, Vardy’s price could shorten once more should Kane come unstuck.

Leicester are next up at home to a Southampton side which has failed to win six of their last nine on the road, before the Foxes head up to relegation-threatened Sunderland.

With Vardy back on a high after that little piece of genius in the German capital, there’s plenty of reason to fancy he might re-establish himself at the top of the hotshot pecking order over the coming weeks.
