Vardy needs to find that magic touch to ward off Aguero

It’s not just the Premier league title battle which has become a box-office four-way fight, with the race to win this year’s Golden Boot also hotting up in recent weeks.

Leicester’s Jamie Vardy has led the way since mid-September, and though the Englishman still tops the pile on 19 goals ahead of this weekend’s fixtures, he’s coming under increasing pressure from a chasing trio of hotshots.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku has been a big beneficiary of the Toffee’s marauding football under Roberto Martinez this season, and the Belgian currently sits second on 18 goals, while Tottenham’s Harry Kane is third on 17.

The pick of the bunch however is two-time Golden Boot winner Sergio Aguero on 16, with the Manchester City ace in fine form.

Aguero has notched eight in seven Premier League fixtures, while Vardy has grabbed four in that time, as has Kane, while Lukaku has three, and the odds reflect how tight it is with just three goals splitting the quartet.

Vardy, a 80/1 shot six months ago still tops the betting at 2/1, with Lukaku hot on his tails at 5/2.

Aguero and Kane are both at 3/1, and it’s then 28/1 before Riyad Mahrez comes up.

His recent form for Man City suggests Aguero could be the man to back, but with Leicester facing a host of teams in the bottom half of the table, Vardy will be expecting to bury a few more goals before the season is out.

The pair have a chance to stake their claims once more this weekend, with Man City heading to free-falling Norwich, and Leicester hosting another struggler in Newcastle.

Kane too could be on the scoresheet by the weekend is over, with Tottenham heading to Aston Villa.

But for the superstitious among you, it may be worth noting that only one of the last four Golden Boot winners has won the Premier League in the same season…
