Sunderland to triumph over Newcastle in crucial derby

Published:

Sunderland are preparing to visit Newcastle in what could be the most important Tyne-Weir derby in history.

Both sides occupy the relegation zone following Norwich City’s 1-0 win over Swansea and the result of the upcoming match will have a big say of who stays in the division.

The Mackems are three points behind the Canaries, but with two games in hand, with the Magpies a point behind having played the same number of games as their local rivals.

A loss for either side would see them plunge further into trouble with only eight remaining fixtures to save themselves.

Survival this season is particularly important and could have a say on the long-term future of both clubs given the financial rewards in the Premier League next term.

Many pundits are speculating that whoever goes down will stand to lose roughly £100m in TV money and it will be difficult for whoever misses out to recoup their losses and make up on lost ground.

Looking at the game itself, it would be sensible to back Sam Allardyce’s men to emerge with three points.

Sunderland are priced at 11/4 to win the match and given the recent history between the pair it seems the most viable options.

The Mackems have won all six of the last meetings between the pair and haven’t lost to their north east rivals since 2011, their only defeat in the previous ten Tyne-Wear derbies.

Over the course of those last six victories, Sunderland have scored 13 goals, averaging over two strikes per match.

Conversely, The Magpies have only scored once in those six defeats and continually struggle in the derby.

Therefore, backing the Mackems to win to nil would be a good idea and can be backed at 5/1.
