Morton’s McManus ‘surprised’ to scoop Player of the Month award

Greenock Morton’s Declan McManus insists he was surprised to hear that he had won the Ladbrokes Championship Player of the Month award for February.

The on-loan Fleetwood Town striker picked up the accolade after a string of impressive performances for the Ton.

But McManus was amazed at the news, saying: “I was actually pretty shocked about winning the award.

“But I’m obviously delighted. To be picked ahead of Hibs or Rangers players who have played so well is a big thing.”

Currently in his second loan spell at the club following last season’s League 1 success, McManus admits things are a lot more difficult at Championship level.

While a natural striker, the 21-year old has been used in a more advanced midfield role this season to accommodate teammate Denny Johnstone up-front for the Ton.

However, he has enjoyed every minute of his football since returning to Greenock and hopes to keep the form going into the business end of the season.

He said: “I’ve only been back here since January but I’m enjoying every minute. We’ve been getting good results and teams like Rangers and Hibs haven’t found it easy against us.

“There are better players in this league, better teams. When I came back in January, Denny was doing really well.

“I’ve played more of an attacking midfield role this season and I’ve tried to fill in for the team more so the gaffer’s happy with me.

“I’ve still got a few goals and a few assists so I’m happy all round. I hope now to just keep it up.”

Morton are 1/2 favourites to beat the Ladbrokes Championship’s bottom side Alloa this weekend with the draw priced at 3/1 and a Wasps success at 19/4.
