Leicester City fan cashes out £20 Premier League title bet for £29k
After backing Leicester City to win the Premier League title at the start of the season at odds of 5000/1, Foxes fan Jon Pryke has called it a day and cashed out his £20 bet for a whopping £29,000.
Despite being adamant all season his side would defy the odds to deliver the greatest sporting upset of all time to land the £100k windfall, the 59 year old’s late change of heart comes as he fears sides ‘parking the bus’ ahead of crucial games for Leicester and their rivals.
The cash out figure is the biggest of the season to date for any bet on Leicester City and the early payout also becomes the biggest jackpot won on the Foxes.
Jon commented: “I just feel like our luck might be running out. Teams have worked out how to play against us and the smaller teams will just start parking the bus. I’d actually have preferred our run in to be against the bigger teams as we know how to beat them.”
“It’s been a crazy season, I’d be silly not to take my money and run. I’ve also backed Leicester to finish in the top 4 at 400/1, so I can enjoy the rest of season knowing I’ve got my winnings early. £29,000 is a huge amount of money and I’d be silly ignore it. Not bad from £20,” he added.
Pryke plans to watch Leicester’s away game at Watford on Saturday with his son at home, but denies there will be any lavish celebrations: “I was going to buy a bungalow with my winnings but now I think I’ll settle for some extra Chinese for the Watford game.”
A total 47 Ladbrokes customers backed Leicester City to win the title at the start of the season at 5000/1 and John becomes the fourth to take winnings early, following in the footsteps of student Nathan Finlow who took £1,600 from a £2 wager.
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Jon’s gut must be telling him Leicester’s luck is about to run out so we don’t blame him for cashing in his bet at all. £29k from £20 is an incredibly impressive return regardless and we take our hat off to him for having the vision to back his side at 5000/1 at the start of the season.”
He added: “An extra round of prawn crackers is a good start but hopefully he can enjoy spending his winnings on plenty more for the rest of the season and beyond.”
