Ladbrokes Premiership: Motherwell and Hearts capitalise on cup schedule

Published:

With cup action dominating proceedings north of the border there were just two games to enjoy in the Ladbrokes Premiership over the weekend and Motherwell and Hearts were the sides to take advantage.

The Jam Tarts claimed all three points when hosting Partick Thistle at Tynecastle with Arnaud Djoum’s first half strike enough to seal all three points.

The win came after a pre-match banner reading “No Style No Bottle Neilson Out” had been flown over the stadium but with Djoum’s strike moving the Jambos to within six points of Aberdeen and just 10 behind leaders Celtic there can be few complaints about Hearts’ first season back in the big time.

The only other game to take place saw Motherwell ease any relegation fears with a 1-0 win on the road against Hamilton.

The prolific Louis Moult may have seen a penalty saved by Accies goalkeeper Michael McGovern but Louis Laing proved to be the away side’s superman, with his 45th-minute strike proving the difference.

Victory saw Motherwell leapfrog Inverness and Partick to sit seventh in the table and while both the Jags and the Caley Jags have two games in hand Mark McGhee will be happy to have the points on the board a seven-point cushion over Kilmarnock in the relegation play-off spot.

Partick will get a chance to close the gap on Tuesday but with second-place Aberdeen the visitors to Firhill Stadium and odds of 14/5 on a home win Motherwell should be safe.

Next up for the Jags is a home game against Celtic so if Motherwell can overcome a much-improved Dundee United on March 11 and things go expected for Partick. Well fans might start looking ahead to season with their top flight status assured.
