It’s official – Ryan Giggs is the greatest ever Welsh sportsman

Published:

Ryan Giggs has officially been recognised as the greatest sportsman Wales has ever produced (sort of).

To mark St David’s Day Ladbrokes asked its Twitter following to vote for the greatest ever Welsh sporting hero, pitting the Manchester United legend against Joe Calzaghe, Neil Jenkins and Ian Woosnam and with 55 per cent of the overall vote the man who won 13 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups, two Champions Leagues and a Fifa Club World Cup was the clear winner.

Calzaghe may be @The Pride of Wales’ but it’s clear he plays second fiddle to the footballer, gaining 36 per cent of the votes despite going his 46-fight career without suffering a single defeat.

Giggs may have come out on top in the poll but should the former WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring Super-Middleweight champion wish to argue his case it wouldn’t be hard to see the current United assistant manager step aside.

With Giggs and Calzaghe accounting for 91 per cent of the votes it was a dog fight for third place and Rugby Union hero Neil Jenkins just edged out golfer Ian Woosnam.

enkins, who became Wales record points-scorer after just 28 test matches, walked away with five per cent of the votes while Woosy, who won the Masters in 1991 and secured top five finishes at the US

Open and Open Championship, completed the voting with four per cent.
Rumours that Gavin Henson and Robbie Savage have demanded a recount are currently unconfirmed.
