Better Call Saúl: Atlético Midfielder May Be Man United’s Missing Link

Published:

Manchester United are reportedly preparing to swoop for highly-rated Spanish u-21 international Saúl Ñíguez. The young Atlético Madrid midfielder has scored four times in 24 games this season, and already has a Copa del Rey medal to his name.

Pacy, skilful and tough in the tackle, Saúl has attracted numerous admirers, including Arsenal. And with Atlético in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, there’s a chance for the player to announce himself on the biggest stage in European football.

But with Louis van Gaal’s side having struggled to create chances in an inconsistent season, United may be happy to outbid Saúl’s other suitors to bring the lively youngster to Old Trafford, where he would join fellow Spaniards Juan Mata and Ander Herrera.

Having shown an ability to produce moments of magic – like a stunning bicycle-kick in last season’s Madrid derby – sources claim the Reds are willing to spend big for Saul’s signature.

Talksport put United’s proposed bid at £18m whilst Spanish source Don Balon estimate the skilful midfielder could set United back €40m (£31m).

United are next in action on Sunday 3 April, as they look to build on their Manchester Derby success against Everton at Old Trafford. We’re offering evens on United to win against Roberto Martinez’s side, who have lost three of their last four Premier League games.
