‘Young Schweinsteiger’ would be perfect for Liverpool

It can often be difficult to tell whether a player is angling for a move and that’s why it’s refreshing to see such honesty from Granit Xhaka.

The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder made it plainly clear that he wants to play in the Premier League amid interest from Liverpool.

Monchengladbach will do all they can to try and keep the Swiss star in the Bundesliga, but the Reds should be encouraged by his latest comments.

Quoted by the Daily Star, Xhaka said: “England is my dream. I do not hide it.

“Whether I’ll be happy there, only the good Lord knows.

“For me money is not important. Otherwise I would not move from Basel to Monchengladbach in 2012.

“It’s about being a big challenge for me as a footballer.”

The 23-year-old midfielder would fit in perfectly at Liverpool and, under Jurgen Klopp, he would have a manager that understands his game.

Klopp and Xhaka’s time in the German top flight overlapped for three years and the Swiss man was a star for his club during this time.

The Reds manager will be more than aware of his latest target’s ability due to the rivalry between their two clubs.

Borussia Dortmund and the Foals compete in the fiercely contested Borussenderby, born out of competition over their shared prefix.

Klopp will have witnessed a midfielder with bags of skill in Xhaka and the 23-year-old who has played over 100 times for his club despite being so young.

He is already the integral cog in the centre of the park for Monchengladbach and has also contributed with eight goals for his club.

Internationally, he is also a star and has already gained 39 caps for Switzerland, finding the net six times.

Indeed, his former national boss Ottmar Hitzfeld was the one to describe him as a young Schweinsteiger.
