Sunderland can build on Liverpool late-show against Man United
Liverpool fans’ 77th-minute walk-out at Anfield last week took the headlines, and in doing so took the shine off what was a gritty comeback from Sunderland on Merseyside.
The Black Cats scored twice in the final 15 minutes to take a point back to Wearside, and who knows how crucial that could be come May.
It follows on from an unlucky 1-0 loss at home to Man City, but there is still reason to be optimistic at the Stadium of Light, even if the 1/5 on Sam Allardyce’s side to be relegated suggests otherwise.
Man United are the visitors this weekend, and Louis van Gaal’s men have won just one of their last six away games.
That spell has included trips to three sides in the bottom half of the table, and even in their final years under Sir Alex Ferguson they often found a difficult opponent when coming to Sunderland.
The Red Devils may have won five and drawn two of their last seven league visits to the Black Cats, but each of those five victories came by a single-goal margin.
Given their goalscoring troubles this season then, this is certainly a potential banana skin for Wayne Rooney and co, and the 15/4 on Sunderland to win Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off could be a popular choice for an early weekend winner.
With five of the last six meetings between the sides at Sunderland seeing under 2.5 goals, the 4/6 with Ladbrokes on another low-scorer under 2.5 could be a solid option.
Indeed, four of the most recent sextet of league encounters has seen one goal or less, and under 1.5 is available at 2/1.
Allardyce will be plenty aware that despite United’s recent improvements under Louis van Gaal, City were fortunate to leave Wearside victorious last week, and their gritty performance at Liverpool will only inspire them further to grab a result this weekend.
