Man United set to stake late bid for former City defender

Manchester United may have left it late but reports are suggesting they are set to make a Deadline Day move for Olympiacos star Omar Elabdellaoui.

The 24-year-old attracted admiring glances in the summer after an impressive maiden season in Greece, with Benfica seeing a bid of €5.5m rejected.

But now it appears that a move to the Premier League could be on the cards for the Norwegian international.

With the ability to play at right back but capable pushing up when needed, Elabdelloui looks likely to be a second-choice option after a move for Mathieu Debuchy was rumoured to fall through earlier in the day.

It wouldn’t be his first foray in English football, or the city of Manchester even, should he make a late move to Old Trafford though.

After impressing in his homeland with Skeid, aged 16 he joined the Manchester City U18 side, with then-boss Scott Sellars declaring that he had “a big future”.

That big future wasn’t to be at Eastlands though as he failed to make a single appearance for the club’s senior team, a spot on the bench during a Europa League tie being the closest he got.

Loans at Stromsgodset, Feyenoord and Eintracht Braunschweig followed before signing for the Athens-based club at the end of his contract with the Citizens.

A year-and-a-half into his time with the club and after 31 league appearances, it appears he could yet have another crack at the Premier League with United rumoured to be in pursuit.

United find themselves with plenty of injury troubles in the defensive positions with the likes of Matteo Darmian, Marcus Rojo and Phil Jones currently on the treatment table and could resolve that with this surprise move.

There is time for the deal to be done, but LVG and co. must move fast if they are to avoid missing out on another transfer target.
