Louis van Gaal: Man United are coping with the pressure

Louis van Gaal came out swinging ahead of Manchester United’s tip to Sunderland this weekend, saying the club is coping with the pressure it currently faces and that reports about Jose Mourinho replacing him are wide of the mark.
Former Chelsea manager Jose is the 1/5 favourite to replace Van Gaal this summer, with some sections of the media claiming the Portuguese has already agreed terms on a three-year, £15m-per-year deal.
Van Gaal insists these reports are utterly false and asked the media to desist with such stories until they have concrete evidence that his days are numbered.
The Dutchman claimed the increased scrutiny is adding to the pressure both he and his players are having to contend with but claimed they are doing so admirably.
“We are doing great under pressure. You see us playing now we are mentally very strong. We can cope with the pressure. We have to improve our consistency. We have to win a lot of matches in a row,” he said.
“We don’t have to look at our competitors. You have to win your own matches first. That is why we were so frustrated at Chelsea. We know the top four play against each other. It is sure some competitors will lose points. We have to win first.”
Van Gaal is convinced he will remain in charge of United next season if he can guide the Red Devils to a top four finish.
With Arsenal playing Leicester and Manchester City playing Tottenham this weekend there is an opportunity for United to claw back some points on the current top four but with the Red Devils travelling to Sunderland for Saturday’s early kick-off they will have to win their game first.
The visitors go into the contest as 3/4 favourites, with the draw on at 5/2 and Sunderland priced up at 15/4 to pile further doubt on Van Gaal’s future.
