Liverpool star could make for perfect backup at Tottenham

Football transfer rumours need to taken with a pinch of salt at the best of times, but the portion size must be increased accordingly when peering over the gossip columns immediately after a transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur have had a long-running vacancy for another striker to play deputy to Harry Kane. The Lilywhites couldn’t find the right man during the recent winter shopping season, but have a raft of in-between forwards that could lead the line should the England striker have a spell out of the side.
Although Son Heung-min, Nacer Chadli and Clinton N’Jie are all credible stop gaps of varying class, the north Londoners will no doubt explore the market once again come the summer.
It may be that the club have their interest piqued by a high-class performer elsewhere in the division that has seemingly run out of credit at his current club.
According to the Daily Star (where’s that salt), Jurgen Klopp is mulling over the idea of rebuilding Liverpool’s squad in the offseason without Daniel Sturridge.
A host of injury issues has limited the England international to just six senior appearances for the club this term. With such an unreliable fitness record, Klopp can be forgiven for wanting a more readily-available star to be the focus of his Liverpool attack.
Newcastle are the early frontrunners for Sturridge’s signature according the Star, at a price of £30m, but it could be that Spurs is the perfect landing spot for the 26-year-old.
As a big-club tourist over his career, the Lilywhites remain one of the few Premier League teams able to match Sturridge’s stature that the striker hasn’t played for. Arsenal and Man United are the others, but the former are well-stocked up front and the latter aren’t likely to want any Anfield castoffs.
With Spurs a 1/6 shot to make it in to the Champions League this season, compared to 16/1 at Liverpool, finding recruits of quality will be a priority for Mauricio Pochettino, despite the Argentine’s obvious preferred youth-first buying strategy.
Sturridge, however, is just young enough to pass as a Pochettino purchase and could actually benefit from playing second-fiddle to Kane from a fitness point of view.
Without being the leader of the attack, the 16-cap Three Lions wouldn’t be forced back into action as quickly as he is at Liverpool, and could play a impact role off the bench if required.
