Ladbrokes Golden Jacket: Is Patchys Kerry about to create history?

Should Patchys Kerry put on another staying masterclass and land the 2016 Ladbrokes Golden Jacket she’ll become the first ante post favourite to oblige in the competition’s 42-year history.

And if you believe the title sponsors and a large section of the greyhound racing public, there will be no stopping Mark Wallis’ impressive bitch at Crayford this evening.

The daughter of Blackstone Gene is just 4/9 to notch a fourth straight win over the Kent track’s 714m trip and on current form it’s difficult to put a case forward for her five challengers.

A nine-length Trial Stakes victory set the tone in late January while subsequent performances in the Heats and Semi-Final saw Patchys Kerry tear her rivals to shreds after exhibiting searing early pace and incredible stamina.

However, it’s worth noting the other claims to the £17,500 prize with Diesel Flo a lively outsider at odds of 8/1.

She finished 4¾ lengths behind the jolly in the second Semi-Final but the way Michael Fawsitt’s four-year-old ran on following bump at the first corner suggests a reversal isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.

Coupled with that, two impressive victories in the lead-up to that contest further highlight her credentials.

Elsewhere, Racenight Jenny will wear the white jacket instead of Patchys Kerry and if she can avoid any early trouble there are worse 12/1 shots to be on.

Droopys Alberta is the 20/1 lively longshot having squeaked through to this stage, Oneco Sky (7/1) is an interesting runner in box five and last, but perhaps not least, is Clonmoyle Shane (16/1) in the stripes.

His lack of early pace and propensity to miss the kick is a worry but once he gets going there’s no doubting his stomach for the fight.

You can watch the action unfold live on Sky Sports and in Ladbrokes betting shops across the UK.
