Ladbrokes Challenge Cup: Distington hoping to continue underdog story

| 12.02.2016

The Second Round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup is upon us and there’s one tie in particular that’s captured the imagination.

Making their first ever appearance in the competition, the Cumbria Men’s League champions Distington dumped out National Conference Division One side Normanton Knights on their own patch last month.

And following that famous 31-18 success the village side now have another scalp firmly in their sights.

National Conference Premier League outfit York Acorn stand in the way of Distington and an incredible Third Round berth.

And with a potential draw against a Kingstone Press League 1 team on offer there’s plenty of motivation for both sides.

“It’s a good incentive, playing a League 1 club. It’d be great to get to the third round and face someone like Barrow,” said Distington head coach Carl Hewer.

“They’re only 40 miles down the coast, so it’d be a great Cumbrian derby. But we’re not looking any further than York Acorn, really. I’ve seen a bit of them and they’re a good side, so we’ll be massive underdogs going into it again.

“We have nothing to lose. If we make a good account of ourselves and put in a decent performance then I’ll be proud and we’ll see where that takes us.”

Meanwhile, fellow Cumbrian side Kells are facing the opposite scenario as they welcome First Round upsetters Underbank Rangers.

They beat Leigh Miners Rangers to progress and Kells coach Peter Smith isn’t taking the opposition lightly.

Speaking to the News and Star he said: “That was a terrific result for them so we are expecting a tough contest. We pipped them for promotion in our first season in the Conference set-up and since then they have followed us through, now reaching the First Division.

“They are obviously a club on the rise and I hear they have named Darren ‘Rocky’ Turner in the squad for Saturday. He’s 42 now but has been a top pro in his day with Sheffield and Huddersfield.”
