Five of the greatest Super Bowl adverts of all time

Published:

This weekend will see Super Bowl hit the big 50, and that means it’s time for the annual hubbub over the half-time commercials, but this year will have to go some to match the best over the years.

With a 30-second slot set to cost a record-breaking – and jaw-dropping – $5m dollars this year, those who stump up the fee are going to have to pull their fingers out to make it worthwhile.

Of course, with that slot coming in the middle of the most-watched show on the planet, it can be a total gamechanger when you get it right.

Here are five of the best Super Bowl ads which got it absolutely spot on..

Volkwagen’s The Force – 2011

One for all the family – and Star Wars fanatics.

Poor little Darth Vader is having trouble finding the force, until a VW arrives that is.

Reebok – Office Linebacker with Terry Tate – 2003

This one appealed to anyone who has ever worked in an office.

You know that feeling when you’d really like to make someone pay? Well, Reebok hired Terry Tate: Office Linebacker.

Snickers – Featuring Betty White 2010

Playing on Snickers’ tag line “You’re not you when you’re hungry”, the chocolate bar company brought in Betty White and some adults-only innuendo.

America loved it.

McDonald’s – The Showdown – 1993

This was always going to be a biggy as America’s biggest fast food chain aligned with two of the NBA’s biggest stars in Larry Bird and Michael Jordan.

The pair duke it out for a Big Mac, with Jordan sporting a very ‘1993’ sweater. Simple and super.

Old Spice – The man your man could smell like – 2010

We couldn’t finish this little fivesome with anything else.

A brilliant script, a slick visual and all-round awesomeness meant this is one of the best adverts ever, not just of Super Bowl fame and quickly became a cult classic.

I’m on a horse.
