Fitness the key to Scotland midfielder’s Celtic future

Charlie Mulgrew is yet to sign a new contract at Celtic, but boss Ronny Deila insists the midfielder has a future at the club.
Mulgrew has only made eight appearances across all competitions this season, five of those in the league, and injuries have limited his playing time at Celtic Park.
The Norwegian manager sees a future for his player in the squad, but only if the 29-year-old can manage to remain injury free.
Explaining his stance, Deila said: “We need consistency of play but we know Charlie is a very good footballer. He is a character and a person I really like.
“But without having him on the pitch, it’s difficult. Charlie has experience and is a leader type. A contract offer could happen.
“Charlie is an important player and he is a professional who brings a lot of positive energy to the dressing room.
“But, again, without having him on the pitch, it’s more difficult. We want him to stay for a longer while without any setbacks.”
The midfielder has obvious talent when he is given a run in the team, with the Scotland international winning the SPL Player of the Year in 2012.
Celtic will need all their players at their best for their upcoming run of games and Mulgrew is no exception.
The Bhoys are only ahead of Aberdeen on goal difference, but have a game in hand, and this is one of the tightest battles at the top of the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership in recent memory.
Since 2012, the Hoops have won the league by at least 17 points every season, but victory for the Dons when they last met has meant the title is truly up for grabs this season.
Deila’s side are 1/14 to finish the campaign as champions, while Aberdeen are priced at 6/1.
