Finally time for Arsenal to secure long-term target

In the history of transfer rumours none have been as persistent as Gonzalo Higuain to Arsenal.

The Argentine forward is once again being linked with a move to the Emirates, roughly five years after speculation first started.

However, for the first time in a while, it actually looks likely that the long-talked-about transfer will go ahead and it would make sense for both parties.

For Higuain, a move to north London would allow him a realistic chance of a league triumph, something that isn’t really on the cards with Napoli.

The Serie A outfit were on course to be a real contender for winning their first Scudetto since 1990, but now such a success looks unlikely.

Maurizio Sarri’s men have led the way in Italy since the middle of January, but a re-emerging force has seen them knocked off the top of the table.

Juventus are back on form after a poor start to the campaign, where they only won one of their first six league campaigns, and have overtaken the Little Donkeys.

The Old Lady have returned to their usual position in Italian football and you would have to expect that they will secure a fifth consecutive Scudetto having won 11 of their last 12 Serie A fixtures.

Napoli have been in the Turin side’s shadow for all those five seasons and that has to be frustrating for a player of Higuain’s quality.

Therefore, the 28-year-old should look to move to a club where he can compete for a league title and Arsenal definitely fit that criteria.

The Gunners’ win over Leicester City in their last Premier League outing moved Arsene Wenger’s men to within two points of the table-topping Foxes and they are looking like real contenders.

However, the one thing that the north Londoners are really lacking at the moment is a variety of goal-getters, with no one in the squad close to Olivier Giroud’s 18 strikes across all competitions.

Clearly Higuain, who has found the net 26 times in 31 appearances this term, would be able to do that and a deal would allow both club and player to end their hunt for another league title.
