Ex- Man Utd star could cross Liverpool divide in the summer
With Christian Benteke continuing to choke in front of goal, the morning gossip columns suggest Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will look to another proven Premier League marksman to try and remedy the chronic lack of bite at Anfield.
Frustrated by both the form and persistent unavailability of his current collection of strikers, Klopp is rumoured to have demanded the Liverpool board make every effort to snare Bayer Leverkusen hotshot Javier Hernandez this summer.
Having endured a rather frustrating spell on loan at Real Madrid last season, the man Leverkusen signed on a permanent deal for just £7.5m from Manchester United back in August has rattled in 22 goals in just 26 games for the Bundesliga outfit.
The Mexican’s tally is only ten shy of the amount Liverpool have mustered in the league all season.
Hernandez was formerly cast in the role of super sub at Manchester United, where numerous vital goals helped to land the Red Devils two titles.
Although United lost faith in the Mexican poacher, his record of 59 goals in 157 appearances tells the story of one that possibly got away from Old Trafford, especially as over half of those outings came from the bench.
Proving what he can do when given regular starts, the player nicknamed “Chicharito” is busy building his reputation as a world class striker over in Germany.
With Benteke misfiring like a rusty Ford Cortina and not trusted by his manager to begin top-flight games, Danny Ings crocked, Daniel Sturridge undependable and Divock Origi still finding his feet, it has been left to auxiliary centre-forward Roberto Firmino to lead the Liverpool line of late.
It remains to be seen just how feasible a switch back to the Premier League would be, especially given the market value now attached.
However, having fallen out with United towards the end of his time there, Hernandez may have no qualms at all in joining their bitter rivals.
Liverpool next face rock-bottom Aston Villa in the Premier League, where the visitors to Villa Park are priced at 4/5 to grab three points.
