Dundee hosted St Johnstone on Friday night and emerged with a 2-0 victory to leapfrog their opponents in the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership table.

The Dees are now fifth in the league and owe this to their performances of their in form top scorer.

Kane Hemmings scored both goals in the win over the Saints and those strikes brought his tally for the season to 15.

He opened the scoring for Paul Hartley’s men after pouncing on a rebound following a save from Greg Stewart’s effort.

The striker doubled the lead soon after as he slotted home after being played in by Gary Harkins.

Hemmings is now only six behind Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths in the Scottish scoring charts and is real contention to overtake him by the end of the campaign.

Griffiths is currently the 1/5 favourite to be the league’s top scorer, with the Dundee man priced at 20/1, while Aberdeen’s Adam Rooney comes in at 7/2.

Getting ahead of these two will be a tough ask for the English striker, but it will not be an impossible endeavour.

The 23-year-old has scored 12 times in his last nine appearances and this is his best run of the season.

Clearly, the forward has found a rich vein of form and if he can continue to find the net with such ease, it won’t be long until he is closing the gap on the two front runners.

Conversely, Griffiths has only found the net twice in his last four games and this is in stark contrast to earlier in the term when he was notching up multiple strikes per games.

The Celtic man is slowing down a bit and this opens up the possibility for Hemmings to make the battle for top scorer a lot more interesting.
