Doumbia signing sees Newcastle slashed for busy Deadline Day

Published:

Newcastle United have secured the signing of Roma striker Seydou Doumbia subject to a medical according to reports.

The arrival of the Ivory Coast international is statement of intent from Steve McClaren as he looks to lift the Magpies out of the relegation zone.

Doumbia has been on loan at CSKA Moscow for the first half of the campaign, netting 11 goals in 21 games after finding opportunities in the Italian capital limited.

Returning to the Russian side that he scored over 90 goals for in the last six years has seen others rekindle their interest in the 33-capped forward.

It looks as if Newcastle have won the race to bring the 28-year-old to the Premier League in what could be the first of many deals to be done by the north east outfit if the betting is to believed.

The Toon started the day as Ladbrokes’ 9/2 favourites to sign the most players before the window slammed shut, but with one man looking like he is in the bag, a swathe of money has seen them backed into 7/4.

As if one striker wasn’t enough for the United faithful, the side still lead the race to sign West Brom’s wantaway striker Saido Berahino.

The Baggies man is 5/4 to move to St James’ Park today, with Stoke (9/4) and Tottenham (8/1) the nearest challengers according to the odds.

A Ladbrokes spokesman said “The tug-of-war between Newcastle and Stoke for Saido Berahino’s signature could be a drawn out affair but the odds suggest it’s the big spending Magpies who’ll finally prise the striker away from West Brom.”

Do just that and not only will McClaren have an excellent pair of attacking recruits, but those backing the Toon to be the busiest today will also be saluting business well done.
